Hearts Afire Rescue was established in New Mexico in the early 1980s as a very informal mom and pop effort to help neighbors with their animal problems. We did both rescue and humane trapping of pesky yard creatures. Demand for help was high. We had a policy that when an animal was in trouble, we did not charge any fee. If, however, the home owner was in trouble, we charged a labor fee. After a couple of years, this policy became somewhat complicated. Its hard to imagine that a raccoon in the garbage is a reason to rescue the coon. To better formalize and clarify our policies, in 1988 we formed an LLC {Krittergitters} and split it into two divisions: trapping and rescue. We also applied and received our first rehabilitation permit.

For the next 13 years Krittergitters grew into a formidable organization [Fur and Feathers Rescue]. We had multiple trucks out doing trapping and the rescue and rehab had grown into 5 facilities in different cities across the state, rehabbing about 1000 animals per year. We also added a training program for people who wanted to know how to safely handle wildlife and we initiated a comprehensive educational program for kids. This arrangement worked very well because the trapping supported many of the rehabilitation costs. In 2001 we applied for and received our 501[c]3] non-profit status.

In 2008 we relocated to Texas and established a DBA (doing business as) company named Hearts Afire Deer Rescue. This company, at the request of TPWD staff, became a refuge and rehabilitation center for whitetail deer. We kept our educational programs but closed the trapping activities. Hearts Afire consists of 4 acres of high fenced rehab pasture, an ICU pasture, a nursery, a small clinic and a small pasture for disabled and non-releasable deer.

Hearts Afire does not receive any financial contributions from any outside entities. Public donations are our only source of income and all staff is volunteer.
